The first story I wrote was when I was nine.
I had this workbook kind of thing, not part of my school work, in which were writing exercises. Formidable it was, that grim looking thing. My mother loved it. Or perhaps the grammarian in her did.
There were many in which you were required to write a story based on picture prompts. The one I attempted first had a set of six pictures showing how a puppy was injured on the road and how a boy brought him home, nursed him and found a loyal friend in him.
Those days, I had no clue what went into writing a story. After writing what I thought was good enough, I took it to my mother.
“This isn’t a story!” she said. “You’ve just described each of the pictures. Where is the story?”
Accustomed to teaching under-grads, she had no idea how to explain this rather complex concept to her nine-year-old. And she didn’t. But her frown and curled lip spoke volumes.
I never attempted another story again, though I wrote humor pieces often in my large, dedicated 400-page ‘register’. [I still have that relic with me, pages yellowed and brittle.] It was never read by any other eyes but mine.
No wonder humor comes naturally to me. I’ve been playing with it since I was so high.
But I digress, as always.
The point is, describing a logical sequence of images does not a story make. So, what DOES make a story?
That’s what we’ll be studying in this series of workshops.
You will build stories, tighten them up to optimum tautness, and turn them magical with a final sprinkle of stardust.
Come into my Story Clinic—a fiction writing workshop series that’s all about taking your stories and turning them into radiant magic which captivates readers.
No lectures. No fixes. Just solid story work and a bit of star-material.
Five immersive, live, hands-on sessions. No recordings, no procrastination and no perfectly-behaved, one-dimensional characters who are too virtuous for their own good.
