Unknot – Write to Heal FAQs

What is this program about?

Unknot is a 5-day guided writing journey where you’ll turn a difficult personal memory into a meaningful story of release and reflection. Through daily writing activities, prompts, and one live session, you’ll explore your emotions, gain perspective, and gently set those burdens down on the page.

Is this a therapy program?

No, this is not therapy or counseling. It is a guided creative writing experience designed to offer personal catharsis through storytelling. If you are experiencing severe emotional distress, we recommend reaching out to a qualified mental health professional.

Do I need to share my writing with anyone?

Not at all. This program is for you. You’ll have opportunities to share during the Zoom session if you wish, but it’s entirely voluntary. Your story remains yours.

What if I get emotionally overwhelmed during the writing process?

Writing about painful experiences can be triggering. If you feel overwhelmed, you’re encouraged to pause, step away, and care for yourself. You are also free to skip prompts or modify them in a way that feels safer for you.

Must I pick the most painful experience to convert to a story?

Not at all. If your most traumatizing experience is too painful for you to unfold, please try with a smaller, less overwhelming experience. Maybe something at work that’s not painful but only frustrating and annoying. As you heal, you can pick bigger battles to fight.

Will you be reading our stories?

Only if you choose to submit your final draft by Friday afternoon. Reading submissions is optional and for those who wish to be acknowledged and celebrated in our closing circle.

Can I revisit this program later if memories resurface?

Absolutely. The writing prompts and reading materials are yours to keep. You can revisit them anytime you need a safe, familiar space to release and reflect.

What if I miss a day?

Life happens. You’re welcome to catch up at your pace. There’s no penalty or judgment here — this is your personal journey.

Emotional Safety Disclaimer

Participation in this Program is at Your Own Discretion and Comfort.

Unknot: Write to Heal is a writing workshop designed to guide you through the process of reflecting on and expressing painful memories through storytelling. While we believe in the healing potential of this process, it is important to recognize that this program may bring up emotions that could feel intense or challenging. Please read the following carefully to understand the nature of the experience and the steps you can take to safeguard your emotional well-being.

Emotional Impact of Writing About Painful Memories

In this program, we encourage you to explore personal memories that may evoke feelings of sadness, grief, frustration, anger, or even guilt. Writing about these experiences can be cathartic and freeing, but it may also stir up emotions that you have previously repressed or not fully processed.

This Program is Not Therapy

While writing can be a therapeutic tool, Unknot: Write to Heal is not a substitute for therapy or mental health counseling. It is a self-guided writing workshop intended to provide a safe space for personal reflection and creative expression. If you are experiencing significant emotional distress, have unresolved trauma, or are currently in crisis, it is essential that you seek support from a licensed therapist or counselor who can provide the appropriate care.

Voluntary Sharing and Confidentiality

You are under no obligation to share your writing with others during the program. While sharing can be a powerful part of the healing process for some, it is entirely voluntary. If you choose to share, please know that it will be within a supportive and confidential group environment. We aim to create a space that encourages vulnerability and understanding, but sharing remains your personal choice.

What to Do If You Feel Overwhelmed

At any point during the program, you may find that the writing brings up difficult emotions. If you feel overwhelmed or triggered, we encourage you to:

  • Pause and take a break. Step away from your writing and engage in grounding techniques such as deep breathing, stretching, or mindfulness.
  • Reach out for support. You may contact a trusted friend, family member, or a licensed mental health professional. The program includes optional group support, but professional therapy or counseling may be necessary if you experience significant distress.
  • Practice self-compassion. This program is meant to be a journey, and it’s okay if some days feel harder than others. Be gentle with yourself as you work through the process.

Acknowledging Your Emotional Boundaries

It’s important to acknowledge and respect your emotional boundaries throughout the program. You have the right to:

  • Skip a day of writing if it feels too intense.
  • Take breaks from engaging with the content if you need to process things more slowly.
  • Decide not to share your writing, whether with the group or with anyone else. Your writing is your own, and you are not required to present it to anyone unless you feel ready.

After the Program

Once the program is complete, you may find that there are lingering emotions or reflections that continue to surface. This is normal. We encourage you to continue your healing journey by seeking additional support if needed. You may also choose to revisit your writing, revise, or expand upon it at your own pace.

By participating in this program, you acknowledge the following:

  1. You understand that Unknot: Write to Heal involves reflecting on personal memories that may elicit strong emotions.
  2. You understand that this program is not a substitute for professional therapy or crisis intervention.
  3. You agree to take full responsibility for your emotional well-being and seek support if needed.
  4. You understand that sharing your writing is voluntary, and you may choose to share or keep your reflections private.
