Think of it this way: Flash fiction is a quick magic trick. The twist? That’s your big reveal, making your audience go, “Whoa!” And then they want more!

How to Nail the Perfect Twist:

Lay the Breadcrumbs

Good twists don’t come out of nowhere. You need subtle clues along the way—hints your readers will only recognize after the twist hits them between the eyes with a wet towel.

Flip Expectations

Set readers up to think they know where you’re going. Then, surprise them by turning left instead of right. Bonus points if your twist is clever enough to make them reread the story with fresh eyes.

Make It Believable

A twist has to feel earned. No aliens abducting your protagonist in the last line (unless the clues were there). It should be surprising but also make sense when readers connect the dots.

End Strong

The best twists often come in the final sentence. Make that last line your mic drop moment—whether it’s shocking, funny, or downright heartbreaking.
